Our Story
How did VLab Education come to be?
During the covid lockdowns Adam and his fellow masters’ program students were locked out of their lab. Since in person labs were no longer available, the classes was moved online, and supplemented with a virtual reality space to walk through the experiment. Through that class Adam discovered a deep sense of excitement and inspiration for the potential that could unfold.
This experience, combined with Adam’s passion for chemistry and engaging education, birthed the idea that is VLab Education. Over the last several years Adam has assembled and led a team to develop a brilliant chemistry lab app that is now available on the Meta app store
Adam’s Background
Adam traveled around the country to compete in high school club tennis. He chose chemistry over a college sport career because he trusted chemistry would take him further in his career. During highschool he trained with high level tennis players who were homeschooled or went to inner city Los Angeles schools. The other students really disliked chemistry. Adam was viewed as a nerd who actually enjoyed science. They could not figure out why on earth does this guy like science? It is so boring. Unlike the other students, Adam’s high school had a very hands-on lab experience for their chemistry course. Adam was able to see chemical reactions actually occur and witness the power of fire and explosions. His learning opportunity was engaging and inspiring, not limited to a book with descriptions. It was this exhilarating experience he wishes to share with students today.
Adam went on to write a distinguished master’s thesis about ultraviolet cross-linking technology for polymers for use in exterior coatings. The goal of his thesis was to design a coding that, in the presence of sunlight, would harden. While the under layer that is interacting with the substrate or the surface you're applying it to will remain soft and flexible. The hope is to retain flexibility so it is not completely brittle.
During college Adam also had the opportunity to teach a year of chemistry at a homeschool co-op campus and do a demonstration at a private school. His goal was to understand the challenges teachers in both settings face while trying to stoke the flame of excitement for the sciences. Students in the setting were able to try the VLab Education app in its alpha development stage and they gave excellent reviews.
Our Goals
“My dream for VLab is to create a series of experiments that replicate real science like chemistry, biology and physics but to go beyond them to give them even a deeper understanding. We can change the way science is viewed by the next generation.”
- Adam Langevin
Here at VLab Education we want to foster the next generation of doctors, next generation of scientists, the next generation of engineers and biologists. If you are exposed to a scientific field it gives you the opportunity to attempt to pursue it. You can not pursue a field that you have not experienced. Even more likely, you will not pursue a field you did not enjoy learning the first time. The Vlab Education app is a path of exposure in an accessible and engaging manner.
Our goal is to enhance the way science is taught. We want to build an app that can be used in every classroom nationwide as an enhancement to the teachers ability to guide students and allow them to experience what science is really all about. Virtual reality science can be an extreme evolution in science education. Our mission is to cultivate the excitement of investigative discovery in students.
